We wondered before playing Reel Big Fish from Blue Guru Games, owned by LeoVegas, what the largest fish ever captured actually was. After doing some research online, we found the International Game Fishing Association’s top five list, which was topped by Australian fruit farmer Alfred Dean’s catch of a 1,208 kg great white shark in 1959. A curious onlooker would ask how a fish of that size is ever brought on board a boat. Or perhaps they tether it to the ship and pull it in. We’ll have to put the mystery on hold while we test out Blue Guru Game’s slot machine adaptation of the fishing genre, which has free spins, extra purchases, and the collection of money symbols.
A transparent 5×3 reelset is used to play Reel Big Fish, and it bobs along just below the surface of the water. Fish may be seen swimming by in the bottom half of the screen, while a boat and the landmasses can be seen in the top half. The boat now bobs up and down with the generated waves, while bubbles rise and fall from the ocean floor for further realism. Nothing special, but it’s clear that you’re playing a fishing-themed slot machine.
You may fish for wins in Reel Big Fish with a bet of 20 cents up to £/€200 each spin on your desktop, mobile, or tablet computer. Reel Big Fish is a medium-volatile slot machine game featuring four different RTP models (the highest being 96.51 percent and declining to 94 percent, 92 percent, and 90 percent, respectively, across different markets). When landing from the left across one of the 20 fixed paylines, matching symbols have a high hit frequency, resulting in a win on slightly under 1 in 2 spins.
shaped like a fishing hook The payout structure begins with a royal flush on a 10–A card, which awards 1.5–3 times the wager for a five-of-a-kind hit. If you get five of the gas cans, floating light things, maps, or dive gear, your payout will increase to 3.75x your wager or up to 50x your bet. Wilds can be used in place of any other symbol (with the exception of scatters and the fish) to help form winning combinations.

Being a fishing-themed slot, it includes a money symbol feature like the one made famous by Fishin’ Frenzy. This is a possibility both in the main game and in the free spins bonus round of Reel Big Fish. In the base game, fish symbols pay out anywhere from 1x the bet to 5x the bet. Each wild symbol that appears on the reels at the same time multiplies the payout for the fish symbols.

Scatters pay out 8, 12, or 20 free games when you land 3, 4, or 5 of the captain symbol. During the bonus round, meters will display above each set of five reels, ranging from 0 to 3. When scatters activate, the reel level they appear on grows by 1. As long as the reel level is more than 0, a prize is awarded when a fish lands on it. The silver fish pays 1x50x the wager, the greenish one pays 2x100x, and the reddish fish pays 4x200x. If you get a scatter symbol during the bonus round, you’ll get an extra free spin and a +1 multiplier on the corresponding reel level. If a Golden Scatter appears, all paylines are activated and one additional spin is given.

Slot Machine Winners: The Verdict
Blue Guru Games had a decent beginning not so long ago with The Nemean Lion, but the studio has been floundering ever since. Blue Guru Games is known for its narratives, yet the developer has yet to provide one for Reel Big Fish. You’ll be let down if you were hoping for a slot machine adaptation of Hemingway’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Old Man and the Sea. Players are given a rather simplistic fishing game rather than a rendition of a great narrative about humanity and nature, pride, and perseverance.
This may be accomplished by accumulating fish money symbols in the base game with visible wilds. The free spins round shakes things up by eliminating the requirement for the wild symbol to complete the collection of fish symbols during the bonus round. If the reel level is more than zero and a fish symbol appears, the player receives the value of the symbol. Players who enjoy fish-themed slot machines could enjoy this method of awarding prizes. However, with a maximum victory of just 5,000x, the new technique doesn’t seem to provide results worth bragging about. With the exception of occasional titles like Golden Catch or 4 Fantastic Fish, fishing games aren’t often known for being high-paying slot machines.
To be fair, Reel Big Fish is a fishing game, so those who can’t get enough of the salty sea on the reels might feel compelled to cast off and see what they can catch. Blue Guru Games have made a few minor adjustments to the structure that may pique the curiosity of purists, but otherwise it doesn’t bring much to the fish slot genre that wasn’t already available. After we’d set out in Reel Big Fish and returned to shore a few times, we didn’t feel much of a pull to go fishing again.
